Technical Guide: How to Join and Use Zoom for ACBI Meetings
At the American Council of the Blind of Indiana (ACBI), we want everyone to feel comfortable participating in our digital gatherings. Whether you are using a high-tech computer or a standard rotary landline, this guide will help you navigate the Zoom platform with ease.
Joining by Telephone (Landline or Mobile)
You do not need an internet connection or a computer to join our meetings.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Dial the Number: Call +1-312-626-6799 (our local Chicago-based dial-in).
- Meeting ID: When the automated voice asks, enter 328 349 0481 followed by the pound sign (#).
- Participant ID: Zoom will ask for a Participant ID. You can simply press the pound sign (#) again to skip this.
- Passcode: When prompted, enter 975318 followed by the pound sign (#).
- While in the meeting, use your telephone keypad to interact:
- *6 (Star Six): Mutes and unmutes your microphone. Please stay muted when not speaking to reduce background noise.
- *9 (Star Nine): “Raises your hand.” This notifies the host that you would like to speak or ask a question.
Joining by Computer, Tablet, or Smartphone
If you have an internet connection, you can join via the Zoom app or a web browser for high-quality audio.
Using the Quick Link: Click the “Join Zoom Meeting” link found in your ACBI email or on our events page.
First-time users: Your device may ask for permission to “Install Zoom.” Follow the prompts to download the small, free app.
Audio Setup: Once the meeting opens, select “Join with Computer Audio” (or “Internet Audio” on mobile).
Useful Keyboard Shortcuts: If you are using a screen reader or keyboard, these shortcuts are your best friends:
- Windows:
- Alt + A: Mute/Unmute audio. * Alt + Y: Raise/Lower hand.
- Mac:
- Command + Shift + A: Mute/Unmute audio.
- Option + Y: Raise/Lower hand.
- iOS/Android:
- Tap the Microphone icon in the bottom left to mute/unmute.
- Tap “More” (three dots) to find the “Raise Hand” option.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to use a camera?
No. Most of our members join with audio only. You are never required to turn on your video.
What if I get disconnected?
Simply redial the phone number or click the link again. You can join and leave the meeting as many times as you need.

If you are having trouble connecting before a meeting starts, please call the Meeting Host at 765-215-1211 or the ACBI office at 317-500-4840.
