Rehabilitation training is a must for a person who recently experienced vision loss.
Obtaining basic living skills helps build a person’s confidence. It also ensures they will be able to live safely in their own homes and communities. People who are newly blinded are often unaware of what resources are available, and many are unsure of how they are going to take care of themselves or their families. What if there was no way to obtain these basic skills?
Thanks to a donation from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust, Bosma Enterprises is now able to offer a week-long, intensive training program which aims to serve groups of people who do not qualify for traditional VR services. Vision Rehab 101 teaches necessary life skills including:
• Adaptive technology
• Low vision aid training
• Orientation and mobility
• Independent living skills
Bosma Enterprises continues to offer The Bosma Vision Rehab 101 class that is one week in length. The classes are intended for individuals that are not eligible to participate in any other comprehensive independent living skills-based training that are normally sponsored by the Vocational Rehabilitation Services of the State of Indiana. Since the class is only one week in duration, some adjustments were made in the curriculum that differs from the regular comprehensive training program.
Each student will be given 36 hours of group instruction. Time constraints also limit the amount of “one on one” training possible. The classes are intended for more information and resources
and offer something where there are no other training opportunities available. The participants are also exposed to several social opportunities to share their concerns and aspirations with other individuals. They enjoy an evening of games, attending a described audio first run movie and even a live sing along.
There is no cost to any of the participants. They stay at a very nice extended stay hotel and all meals and transportation are provided. The one strict rule is that each participant must be independent in taking care of any medical conditions.
